Planning a doggy costume party or costume contest?  What about a Halloween doggy parade?

Have 2 dogs? Make the other Little Red Riding Hood!

Halloween Dogs, dog halloween costume ideas, dogs and Halloween

The Big Bad Wolf is known as a part of Grimm’s Fairy Tales.  Why not choose a Grimm’s Fairy Tale that isn’t quite as well known?   The Wolf and the Fox could be a fun theme.  Or The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids could but super cute if you will be taking a group of children out trick or treating!

Enjoy classic Fairy Tales?  Go as Joseph Jacob’s “Three Little Pigs”, or Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”.  Mickey Mouse and the Sorcerer’s Apprentice can also stand out from the crowd!

Fables

Fables, like Fairy Tales can also bring some reminiscence between young and old.  “The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing”, the “Priest and the Wolf” and the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” could all be fun!

And, don’t worry; even if you don’t have a “Siberian Husky” or a dog that looks like a wolf, you can still dress him up as a wolf for the night.  I mean, what dog doesn’t want to be a wolf for a night?

Star Wars

Due to the influx of recent Star Wars movies, Star Wars-themed pooch costumes are all the rage.  After all, the Star Wars entity began in the 1970’s and is still bringing new movies to the forefront today.  The kids will recognize your Star Wars characters and so will their parents!  Love Star Wars and want to bond with the family before Halloween?  Sit down and stream all the movies.  You can watch them in individual order or you can change the order so that they are more “chronological” (since the trilogies were released out of order).  Sit down as a family and decide which characters you, your family and the dog will become this year.  Want to make this even more fun?  Pick a few characters that are less well known so your Star Wars friends recognize your efforts.

Listen, everyone loves food and snacks!  We bond over meals.  We dream about good food.  And, if you are anything like me even while you are eating one meal, you are looking forward to and planning your next.

Truly, this is a category where the sky is the limit.

You can easily transform your dog into a bag or box of popcorn with a hot glue gun and some air popped popcorn.

Like cotton candy?  Use some cotton batting, dye it, and string it around your dog with a little cardboard as a base.

Use your imagination!

Use your humor!

Entertain and challenge your friends, or show them what your favorite food idea is by dressing your dog up.

Classics

The Wizard of Oz is another classic full of ideas that are sure to bring festivity to your pets and your home.

Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion are fun ideas if you have a trio of dogs living in your home.

These are all good classic movie references that will likely make your pet the most adorable belle of the ball.

After all, classics are “classics” for a reason!

Classics are something easily recognizable.

And, classics can refer to anything from books and poetry, to movies, video games, cartoons, (previously mentioned fairy tales) or any “classic theme”.

You can even google classic, insert aforementioned theme to come up with more ideas.

For instance; googling classic books, to show your friends you like to read bring ideas such as “The Hobbit”, “The Great Gatsby” “Lord of the Flies” “Treasure Island” “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” or even “Charlotte’s Web”

Want to make it even more fun, make a sign that says “Guess this Classic Book Character” and let your friends, family and neighbors guess!

Other Animals

You love your dog just the way they are… but what if for one night of the year they turned into a bat, a velociraptor, or add a mane and you have a lion?

Ever wanted to turn your “Marley” from “Marley and Me” into a cheetah for the night? All it takes is some nontoxic hair (or fur) paint and a little imagination.

The nice thing about choosing other animals as a theme is that it can be fairly easily found at local pet boutiques and easy to do.

Making your dog his own “Lion’s Mane” with some String on a high set collar can take mere minutes.

Painting your dog, with safe paint of course, like pictured above can be time consuming but rewarding!

Honestly it all depends on your time, budget, and ETA.

I personally, used to like to craft myself however the older I get the busier I get and as of late it is easier to purchase a pet Halloween costume than to make one.  Either is equally acceptable.

Craft it Yourself

How about you?

Do you have a little extra time this holiday season?

Do you fancy yourself a crafter?

Grab your needle and thread, your hot glue, your scissors, or your sewing machine and get ready to make your cute furry pet a one-of-a-kind outfit!  Sew it doggy style!  Give your dog that edge!

Here are 86 of the best costumes, patterns and ideas from Pinterest.

Some of the best and most exhilarating costumes, be it human or pooch, are those that have been hand crafted.

There is just something special that sets apart an individual costume.  It allows you to add specific and unique and original details.  It can even allow you to explain a certain detail or special quality that only your pet has.  Or it can just exhibit and display your cleverness!  All of these traits are great and can set you and your dog apart at any pet costume party

Looking to Save Time?

Pet boutiques in your home town will likely carry many Halloween dog costumes.

The benefit to finding a local pet supply store is not only shopping local, but also being able to try the Halloween outfit on your dog to ensure a good fit!

Even “big box stores” or “Pet Supply Stores” can allow you to try outfits on your dog, which I highly recommend.

Many outfits are not labeled the size you think they might be!  I have ordered items for large dogs that would barely fit a medium dog.  I suppose it is like women’s clothes!  I size 8 in one pair of pants will not fit the same as a size 8 in another designer’s!

However, you can also order pet Halloween costumes online.

Chewy.com and Amazon.com are good go-to’s if you are in a time crunch to get your dog the perfect Halloween garb.

If you order early enough, you can even exchange items or sizes.  Amazon has developed a reputation for allowing their customers to easily return or exchange items, but you have to begin preparing early!

How about asking doggy friends about exchanging pet Halloween costumes?  Not only can this save you time and save your friend’s time; it can save you some serious money.  Pet Halloween costumes can be expensive and remember the New York Post states that 31 million people will dress their pets up for Halloween.  And, I know that lots of people with same sized dogs have play groups!  Get together as a group and discuss exchanging last year’s old costume for this year’s new costume.

Super Easy

Need some ideas that are super easy and can be used at the last minute?  After all, plans can change and life gets busy with family and friends.  I have been known to decide at the last moment to get involved in Halloween festivities.

Find a hat.

A simple cowboy hat can convert your canine companion into a cowboy companion.

Even a baseball cap can turn your dog into an MLB player or “the world’s biggest fan”.

Really, any hat will do!  Have a Fedora, a beret, a beenie, a top hat?   Perhaps you ladies have a bucket cap, a cartwheel cap, or a conical Asian hat.  Hat lovers can use their caps for just one night to allow their canine companion to get involved in the family’s festivities.

Have kids of appropriate size? Use a jersey, dress or T-shirt to fancy up those four paws!

Have a female dog, and need some girlie doggy ideas?

Glue a few feathers together and style a unique headdress.

Halloween Dogs, dog halloween costume ideas, dogs and Halloween

An old wire hanger can easily be unbent and bent into an angel’s halo.  Now drape with a few feathers or cotton batting and use a string or old shoe lace to make a chin strap!

Halloween should be fun for the whole family!

And let’s face it, your pet is part of your family and who will also likely value getting to be part of the celebration.  After all, your pet also sees himself as part of your family!  He wants to be included when you and your family are off having a good time together.

Got a Fearful Dog or a Dog that Doesn’t Like Participating in Regular Halloween Festivities?

Not all dogs enjoy Halloween.  People can look scary and intimidating.  Fearful dogs can panic and protective dogs can become aggressive or show aggressive behaviors.  It is natural if  you understand that your dog doesn’t understand the intricacies of Halloween and why humans act so odd one day a year.  Never force a fearful dog or protective or aggressive dog to get involved in this holiday.

Instead…

Have your very own Halloween Costume contest!

Or, just dress your best friend up for a few classic photo opportunities!  You will thank yourself for years to come!

What is your all time favorite doggy costume that got your dog the most adoration and attention?
